About This Pantry

FISH Community Services Overview

Friends In Service Helping (FISH) has been serving Northern Nevada since 1979, providing a comprehensive network of services designed to meet immediate needs while helping individuals and families build a path toward greater stability and self-sufficiency. FISH’s philosophy is simple: provide a hand up, not a handout. Through Food, Instruction, Shelter, and Healthcare, FISH walks alongside people during times of crisis and provides the resources, support, and opportunities they need to move forward.

Food and Nutrition

FISH operates food banks that provide emergency groceries and pantry staples to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Through its food distribution programs and Family Dining Room, FISH helps ensure that people have access to nutritious meals when they are struggling to make ends meet. Food assistance provides an immediate safety net while helping families preserve limited resources for housing, utilities, transportation, and other essential expenses.

Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing

For individuals and families experiencing homelessness or housing instability, FISH provides emergency shelter and transitional housing. FOCUS House provides shelter for men, while Wylie House serves women and families. These programs provide more than a safe place to sleep—they create stability from which individuals can address the circumstances that contributed to their housing crisis and work toward permanent housing and greater independence.FISH also provides housing opportunities designed to help families and individuals make longer-term progress. Its Student Housing & Learning Center provides affordable housing for students, including single parents pursuing education or workforce training, while the Learning Center offers tutoring, mentoring, and a supportive environment for children and adults.

Healthcare, Dental and Vision Services

FISH recognizes that health challenges can create significant barriers to employment, education, housing stability, and self-sufficiency. Through the Ross Medical Center and related healthcare programs, FISH connects people with access to medical, dental, and vision services they might otherwise be unable to afford. These services help address immediate health needs while supporting individuals in maintaining the health necessary to pursue their long-term goals.

Life Skills and Instruction

FISH's Instruction services focus on the skills and knowledge people need to create lasting change. Life skills programming addresses areas such as budgeting, job readiness, parenting, wellness, and other practical skills that help individuals and families become more stable and independent.FISH also works with community partners to connect people with education, workforce development, and other resources. The goal is not simply to address today's crisis, but to help people develop the tools and confidence needed to change their circumstances.Basic Needs and

Wraparound Support

Many families facing poverty or homelessness are dealing with multiple challenges at the same time. FISH therefore provides additional support—including clothing, hygiene items, household necessities, referrals, and connections to other community resources—to help address the practical barriers that can prevent people from moving forward.

FISH's thrift stores also provide affordable clothing, furniture, and household goods to the community while generating revenue that supports FISH's programs and services.

A Path Toward Self-Sufficiency

What distinguishes FISH is the way these services work together. A person may come to FISH because they need food, but that immediate need can become the starting point for addressing housing, healthcare, employment, education, or other challenges. By bringing multiple services together and connecting clients with community partners, FISH is able to address both the immediate crisis and the underlying barriers to stability.FISH serves individuals and families throughout Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties, collaborating with community organizations, healthcare providers, educational institutions, government agencies, and volunteers to create a stronger network of support.Ultimately, FISH is about more than providing services. It is about restoring dignity, creating opportunity, and helping people move from crisis toward stability and self-sufficiency. Every meal, night of shelter, medical visit, class, food box, and supportive connection is part of a larger goal: helping Northern Nevada families and individuals build a healthier, more secure future.
